A special Labour Party conference took place in London, where Andy Burnham was elected as the party's new leader. He will become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, reports infohub.kz.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that out of 379 candidates put forward, only one met the criteria to proceed to the next stage. Among candidates backed by trade unions and public organizations, one received a total of 23 nominations, including from all eleven trade unions. She announced that Andy Burnham has been elected leader of the Labour Party.
Burnham thanked former Prime Minister Keir Starmer for laying a strong foundation for Labour. According to the new party leader, under Starmer the Labour Party went from its biggest defeat to its biggest victory, placing Labour in a position to change people's lives.
The new prime minister then posted on social media platform X: 'In the coming days, it's not just about changing power in the UK. It's about changing the way the UK is governed,' he wrote.
Andy Burnham will officially take office as Prime Minister on Monday, July 20. On that day, he is scheduled to meet with King Charles III, who will ask him to form a new government.
