Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok signed a constitutional amendment ending his term. From July 20, the speaker of parliament will temporarily serve as acting head of state, reports infohub.kz.
Sulyok announced the signing on social media. "My signature is the final seal of complete and unconditional respect for the duties of the president of the republic and for the institution of the presidency itself. A sign that I have fully complied with Hungary's Fundamental Law and have not violated it," he said in a video message.
The politician also stated that he has "no constitutional means to oppose" the amendment adopted by parliament.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced that from July 20, the speaker of parliament, Ágnes Forsthoffer, will temporarily assume presidential powers. A new president will be elected within 30 days.
Recall that immediately after winning the parliamentary elections, Péter Magyar announced his intention to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president. He later demanded that Sulyok resign, but the politician ignored those demands. Sulyok also accused Magyar of a gross violation of the constitution.
