Kazakhstan's top-ranked tennis player, Elena Rybakina, has advanced to the semifinals of the WTA-500 tournament held in Stuttgart, Germany. She secured her spot by defeating Canada's Leylah Fernandez in a grueling quarterfinal match.
Epic Three-Set Battle
The intense match, played on the Porsche-Arena court, lasted an impressive 3 hours and 2 minutes. Rybakina ultimately triumphed over Fernandez with a final score of 6:7 (5:7), 6:4, 7:6 (8:6). Rybakina served seven aces and committed eight double faults, while Fernandez recorded six aces and six double faults.
Road to the Semifinals
In the earlier rounds of the tournament, Rybakina had demonstrated strong form by defeating Russia's Diana Shnaider, ranked 19th in the world, with a score of 6:3, 6:4. Meanwhile, Fernandez had advanced by beating Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez, who is ranked 79th in the WTA rankings.
Next Challenge
Rybakina is now set to face Russia's Mirra Andreeva, the world number nine, in her quest to reach the tournament final. The Stuttgart tournament, which features a prize fund exceeding $1.2 million (over 570 million tenge), is taking place from April 13th to 19th. Notably, Elena Rybakina was also the champion of this prestigious tournament in 2024.
