Jezkazgan-Kyzylorda Highway Section Nears Completion This Year

Construction is in full swing on a vital stretch of the Jezkazgan-Kyzylorda highway in the Ulytau region, with plans to open a renovated section to traffic by the end of this year. This upgrade is expected to dramatically improve transportation and economic activity in the area.

Strategic Importance of the Highway

The Jezkazgan-Kyzylorda highway is a crucial artery connecting the Ulytau region to southern Kazakhstan. For over 40 years, this road has not seen major repairs, leading to conditions that significantly limit vehicle flow. The ongoing reconstruction aims to more than double the volume of both freight and passenger traffic, unlocking new economic potential.

Progress and Scope of Work

The total length of the highway is over 400 kilometers, with 208 kilometers passing through the Ulytau region. Reconstruction efforts on this segment began in the spring of 2025. Last year, approximately 70% of excavation work was completed, and asphalt concrete was laid on 50 kilometers of the road.

The project includes the construction of 78 drainage culverts, 18 underpasses for livestock, and 4 bridges. One bridge was fully completed last year, while construction and installation are currently underway on three others. The project has mobilized a significant workforce of 700 people and 500 units of equipment.

Quality Control and Opening Timeline

Crews are preparing to begin asphalt paving operations soon, with all necessary construction materials on hand. The quality of the work is under strict supervision by the client, technical oversight specialists, and experts from the National Center for Road Asset Management.

Out of nearly 400 samples taken from road construction materials, 380 met regulatory requirements. While initial asphalt concrete samples showed discrepancies, these were promptly addressed and rectified. Following a directive from the head of state, traffic is slated to commence on the upgraded section this year. The remaining work will focus on road amenities, with the entire project scheduled for completion in 2027.
