Kazakhstan: Deputy Governor of Kostanay Region Detained Amid Corruption Probe
The National Security Committee (KNB) has confirmed the detention of Gulbaram Musagazina, the Deputy Governor of the Kostanay Region. This development follows earlier reports circulating on Telegram channels suggesting her arrest and placement in a temporary detention facility.
The KNB stated in an official response, "We inform you that pre-trial investigation is underway. In accordance with Article 201, Part 1 of the Criminal Procedure Code, other information is not subject to disclosure." The specific details of the investigation remain confidential at this stage.
New Appointment and Responsibilities
Gulbaram Musagazina was appointed to her current position as Deputy Governor of the Kostanay Region in July 2024. According to the regional administration's website, her responsibilities included overseeing economic and social development, as well as leading initiatives in healthcare, employment, and social programs.
Background and Career
Musagazina has a significant background in public service. She graduated from the Kostanay Agricultural Institute in 1997 with a degree in Agricultural Economics and Management. She later earned law and economics degrees from Kostanay State University and Kostanay Engineering-Economic University, respectively, obtaining a Master of Economic Sciences.
Her career began in August 1997 as a tax inspector in the Zhitikara district tax department of the Kostanay region. Over the years, she held various positions, including a senior prosecutor role in the General Prosecutor's Office from 2010 to 2012, overseeing legality in the socio-economic sphere. From 2012 to 2019, she headed the Department of Internal State Audit for the Kostanay Region within the Ministry of Finance's Committee for Internal State Audit. Prior to her recent appointment, she led the Department of Economy and Budgetary Planning of the Kostanay Regional Akimat from 2019 until July 2024.
