Kazakhstan Revamps Railway Stations: Progress and Delays in Aktobe and Semey
Kazakhstan is undertaking a significant overhaul of its railway infrastructure, with major modernization projects underway at the railway stations in Aktobe and Semey. These upgrades aim to enhance passenger experience and modernize key transportation hubs.
Aktobe Railway Station Renovation
The reconstruction of the Aktobe railway station is progressing, with the facility currently at 72% completion, according to Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), the national railway company. The station is slated to open to passengers in August 2026.
Significant work has been completed, including the installation of the roof, external water supply, sewage, and heating systems. Interior finishing, facade work, and the installation of weak signal systems are nearing completion. Landscaping around the station has also commenced.
Initially, plans included a concourse to allow passengers to cross the tracks safely. However, this feature was removed to avoid disrupting cargo and passenger logistics. Instead, elevators and escalators are being installed.
The renovation is being carried out by contractor "Aktobe StroyExpert" LLP. KTZ assures that the work is proceeding according to the agreed schedule, though the final project cost is yet to be disclosed, pending state expert review.
A recent site visit revealed that the station is fully enclosed, with ongoing construction visible from the outside. Temporary metal carriages serve as waiting areas for passengers, offering basic amenities. Administrative staff are also working from these temporary structures.
Semey Railway Station Modernization
In Semey, the railway station's modernization is proceeding alongside its normal operations, as it is considered a socially important facility for the region's transport infrastructure.
External engineering networks for water supply, sewage, and heating have been installed. Work continues on the roof, interior finishing, and an additional construction section for the station building.
KTZ has pledged to complete the Semey station renovation by the end of 2026. The final cost is still under review by the "State Expertise" RSE. The project contractor is "DK Proekt" LLP, selected by the regional administration.
Unlike some other stations in the Abai region, such as Ayagoz, Zharma, and Degeley, which are being completely rebuilt due to their dilapidated state, the Semey station is being modernized while preserving its architectural appearance. This approach ensures the historical character of the building is maintained.
Despite the intention to preserve the architecture, the station currently resembles a plain grey structure of brick and concrete. Construction workers have removed the old facade cladding, and window openings on the upper floors are either open or temporarily covered with plywood. The project's completion date has been extended from the second quarter of 2025 to the end of 2026.
Nationwide Station Upgrades
Kazakhstan Temir Zholy plans to renovate over 120 railway stations by the end of 2026. Of these, 37 have been deemed dilapidated and require demolition, with new structures planned in their place, such as the former Zheleznorudnaya station in Rudny. As of March 11, construction and installation work has been completed at 36 stations, with another 48 stations in the final stages of completion (85-95% ready).
