Almaty's 'Zhas Otаu' Wedding Palace Faces Yet Another Construction Setback

The long-awaited renovation of Almaty's iconic 'Zhas Otаu' wedding palace has hit another snag, with the latest management contract terminated due to non-compliance. This marks yet another setback for the historic venue, which has been awaiting revitalization for years.

A Landmark in Decline

Opened in 1971 and designated as an architectural monument, the 'Zhas Otаu' building has stood empty for over a decade. Its deteriorating exterior has become a point of concern for Almaty residents. Despite plans announced in February 2026 for a major overhaul and a reopening by the end of that year, the situation on the ground remains largely unchanged.

The building continues to stand vacant, with broken windows, crumbling tiles, and graffiti marring its facade. Construction materials that were present in February are still on-site, but no workers have been seen. The interior condition remains unknown due to inaccessibility.

Contract Termination and Future Uncertainty

According to the Almaty City Department of State Assets Management, the trust management contract with 'Jar Jar Almaty' LLP has been terminated because the company failed to fulfill its obligations. The department stated, "In accordance with the trust management agreement dated March 6, 2024, the object was transferred to 'Jar Jar Almaty' LLP. However, as the specified partnership has not fulfilled the obligations stipulated in the contract, contract termination procedures are currently underway."

When the building was handed over in 2024, the city administration had set specific requirements, including preserving the architectural appearance and investing at least 1 billion tenge in reconstruction. Evidence of these commitments is not apparent.

A Pattern of Unfulfilled Promises

This is not the first time the 'Zhas Otаu' palace renovation has faced difficulties. Prior to 2023, another company held the trust management rights but had its contract terminated through legal proceedings for failing to meet its commitments. The property was returned to the city's balance in October 2023 and subsequently transferred to 'Jar Jar Almaty' LLP in 2024, which had promised to restore it as a fully functional banquet hall. Now, the city administration is once again tasked with finding a new manager for the beleaguered landmark.

This development is being closely monitored.
