Kazakh Village Renaming Stalled for Four Years Due to Moratorium
Efforts to rename the village of Elenovka in the Zerendi district of the Akmola region to Samaltau have been on hold for four years, a situation stemming from a moratorium on renaming settlements.
Despite completing all necessary legal procedures, including local community meetings and public hearings, and securing approval from the onomastic commission, the renaming process has stalled. The final stage, awaiting review by the regional maslikhat (local representative body), cannot proceed due to the current restrictions.
Moratorium Halts Renaming Process
Local authorities in the Zerendi district confirmed that the renaming initiative is currently suspended. Once the moratorium is lifted, the documentation will be resubmitted according to the established procedures. This administrative hurdle has prevented the village from officially adopting its new name, Samaltau.
Community Support and Past Disputes
The desire to rename Elenovka to Samaltau was initially supported by a majority of residents during a local assembly in 2022. However, a small group of residents disagreed with the decision, leading to disputes at the time. The current moratorium has effectively paused any resolution to this renaming effort.
This situation highlights the complexities and potential delays involved in administrative changes, even when there is significant community backing.
