40-Degree Heat Forces Kazakh Villagers to Wear Winter Clothes Amidst Mosquito Swarms

Residents of several villages in the Pavlodar region of Kazakhstan are facing an unusual and distressing situation: swarms of mosquitoes so dense that they are forced to wear heavy clothing، including winter jackets and hats، even amidst 40-degree Celsius (104°F) heat. The relentless insect onslaught is preventing people from leaving their homes، hindering daily activities، and causing significant distress to both humans and livestock.

A Summer of Discomfort

Videos circulating on social media depict streets and courtyards blanketed by clouds of mosquitoes. In some footage، the insects are seen forming thick layers on windows of animal enclosures. The sheer volume of the pests is so overwhelming that their buzzing can be heard audibly in the recordings.

One local resident described the ordeal: "We can't go outside right now؛ they attack in swarms instantly. It's impossible to tend to our farms or gardens. Even a trip to the outhouse is a major ordeal every time. It's 40 degrees Celsius، but we're dressed like it's winter، wearing jackets and hats. But even this doesn't help. We don't let the children out at all، and our pets are covered in bites."

Livestock and Wildlife Suffer

The problem extends beyond human discomfort. Local villagers report that livestock and poultry are suffering even more severely from the mosquito attacks. Residents from other villages in the Pavlodar region have also voiced similar complaints، stating that no protective measures seem effective against the overwhelming numbers.

"Spraying repellent only helps for a few minutes، and then they're back،" one resident lamented. "The mosquitoes seem enraged؛ they are everywhere، and no repellents are working against them."

Questions Over Mosquito Control Funding

The widespread nature of the problem has led residents to question the effectiveness of the substantial funds allocated for mosquito control. Official data indicates that 13.5 billion tenge (approximately $30 million USD) has been earmarked for mosquito control efforts in the Pavlodar region over the next three years، with 4.5 billion tenge allocated annually. However، this funding is primarily directed towards treating areas within Pavlodar city، Aksu، the Irtysh pastures، and coastal villages، leaving the affected rural areas untreated.

Official Response and Mitigation Efforts

Following the public outcry، specialists visited the affected villages، including Shoshkaly، Bozalan، Sadykshy، and Shaldai، confirming the abnormal and massive emergence of mosquitoes. Officials from the Department for the Use of Subsoil، Environmental Protection، and Water Resources Management of the Pavlodar region suggested that the unusual proliferation might be due to artificial reservoirs created for collecting water during forest fire suppression، as well as small bodies of water that have formed near these villages.

"This complex situation has been observed over the last two to three days،" explained an official. "The emergence of mosquitoes outside the usual pasture areas might be linked to artificial water bodies created for water collection during forest fire suppression، as well as small water bodies that have appeared near these villages."

Barrier treatment operations began on June 10th، utilizing backpack sprayers and hot fog generators to combat the mosquitoes. Larvicides are also being used to eliminate mosquito larvae in water bodies.

Serzhan Imankulov، the akim (head) of the Shcherbakty district، stated، "We conducted treatment work in May، allocating 1.9 million [tenge]. Then the weather cooled، followed by a sharp heatwave، which caused this massive emergence of mosquitoes. This is an anomaly. We are currently working with sponsorship funds. There isn't enough time to conduct state tenders، and I cannot leave people to deal with the mosquitoes alone."

Currently، disinfection efforts in the affected rural areas are limited to local sites and barrier treatments around children's camps، according to the relevant department.
