Almaty Ramps Up Services Amidst Heavy Rainfall and Storm Warnings
Almaty is bracing for continued adverse weather as heavy rainfall prompts municipal services to operate on an intensified schedule. Forecasters predict the downpour will persist until midday on May 12th، necessitating a city-wide mobilization of resources.
Intensified Weather Conditions
According to the city's akimat (mayor's office) press service، the meteorological agency Kazhydromet has issued warnings for moderate to heavy rain، thunderstorms، and wind gusts reaching up to 20 meters per second. The forecast for May 11th specifically mentioned heavy rainfall and winds up to 18 meters per second in certain areas.
Municipal Services on High Alert
To proactively address and mitigate potential localized flooding، all municipal services and contracted organizations have been placed on 24-hour duty. This includes the deployment of 104 specialized vehicles، 74 motor pumps، 12 vacuum trucks، and 75 rapid response teams comprising 425 road workers. Additionally، 2،300 sandbags have been prepared.
The Almaty City Rescue Service is also on standby، equipped with specialized vehicles and 15 motor pumps. The city's Emergency Situations Department (DChS) has mobilized 53 units of special equipment and 240 personnel. In total، the round-the-clock operational capacity involves 3،080 road workers and 1،225 specialized vehicles.
Public Advisory Issued
Earlier، the DChS advised residents and visitors of Almaty to postpone any plans to visit mountainous areas on May 11th due to the hazardous conditions. This follows a broader forecast indicating significant temperature fluctuations، rain، and strong winds across Astana، Almaty، and Shymkent in the coming days.
