Astana's LRT Set to Launch: New Bus Routes and Enhanced Transit System

Astana is on the cusp of launching its much-anticipated Light Rail Transit (LRT) system، a development poised to reshape the city's transportation landscape. Alongside the introduction of the LRT، a comprehensive overhaul of the city's bus routes is underway، featuring new lines and modified existing ones to integrate seamlessly with the new transit network.

LRT System Undergoing Final Testing

The city's public transport system is currently in a rigorous testing phase. Up to 15 trains are being operated simultaneously during trials to assess their performance under real-world conditions. Every aspect of the train's operation، from movement and stops to passenger boarding and alighting procedures، is being meticulously monitored.

Train Fleet and Operational Schedule

A total of 19 trains have been acquired for the LRT system. Fifteen of these will be in regular service on the line، while the remaining four will serve as backups or be utilized in case of technical issues. Although a precise operational schedule is still being finalized، the frequency of train services and dwell times at stations are being determined.

Key Features of Astana's LRT

The LRT trains in Astana are fully automated، meaning they will operate without a human driver. The elevated tracks ensure that the trains will not intersect with road traffic or traffic lights، promising a smoother and more efficient journey. The trains are designed to reach a maximum speed of approximately 80 kilometers per hour. The route is strategically planned to connect key areas، including the airport، railway stations، residential neighborhoods، and business districts.

Passenger Capacity and Ridership Projections

The LRT system is projected to carry an estimated 25،000 to 45،000 passengers daily during its first year of operation. Each train is designed to accommodate over 600 passengers، significantly boosting the city's public transit capacity.

Safety and Maintenance Protocols

According to CTS company، the LRT system is equipped with robust safety measures. Automated systems are in place to detect any technical malfunctions. Trains have the capability to stop automatically، and a central dispatch center manages communication and evacuation procedures. Regular maintenance، inspection، and repair of the trains will be conducted at a dedicated depot located near the airport.

Integration with Bus Network

To ensure convenient access to the LRT، new bus routes are being established that will connect directly to LRT stations. Additionally، several existing bus routes will be adjusted to align with the new LRT network، creating a more cohesive public transportation experience.

Anticipated Impact on City Traffic

The LRT system is expected to reduce traffic congestion on Astana's roads by approximately 5 percent. Given the increasing number of vehicles in the city، the LRT is anticipated to play a crucial role in alleviating traffic pressure.

Recently، Astana Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek announced that the LRT could be operational within the next 2-3 weeks، indicating the project has reached its final stages. It was previously confirmed that the LRT would utilize a closed payment system with turnstiles.
