Bolivian Military Plane Carrying Central Bank Cash Crashes، Killing 20
A Bolivian military plane carrying a significant amount of cash for the Central Bank has crashed، resulting in the deaths of 20 people and injuring approximately 20 others. The incident occurred in El Alto، a densely populated area، adding to the tragedy.
Tragic Aftermath and Rescue Efforts
Bolivia's Health Minister، Marcela Flores، confirmed the grim toll and appealed to the public for blood donations to aid the injured. The aircraft، belonging to the Bolivian Air Force، crashed onto a busy highway، causing widespread disruption and panic.
Details of the Crash
While initial reports suggested the plane veered off the runway and collided with vehicles، the Ministry of Defense later clarified that the crash happened during landing. Of the eight crew members on board، six survived، but one remains unaccounted for.
Public Scramble for Cash
Adding to the chaos، the plane was transporting money destined for the Central Bank. Following the crash، numerous local residents rushed to the scene to collect the scattered banknotes. This created significant obstacles for firefighters and emergency medical personnel attempting to reach the victims.
Police were forced to use tear gas to disperse the crowd، but many persisted in their efforts to gather the money. Witnesses reported that at least 12 individuals were detained for attempting to collect the cash amidst the ongoing rescue operations.
Central Bank's Plea
The Central Bank of Bolivia has issued a statement urging those who took the money to return it. Bank officials emphasized that the currency had not yet entered circulation and would be rendered unusable. Central Bank President David Espinosa stated that all the recovered money would be destroyed.
This incident highlights the complex challenges faced during disaster response، compounded by the public's reaction to the spilled cash.
