Families in Nura refuse new flats over mold and drafts، despite 20m tenge cost

Families on the housing waitlist in Nura district، Karaganda region، are refusing to move into newly purchased apartments، citing damp walls، mold and cold drafts—raising concerns about safety and how public funds were spent.

This was reported by the Infohub.kz news agency.

Residents cite mold، drafts and safety risks

Local resident Erkegul Gumarova said families are expected to make monthly payments for the homes، but current conditions make it difficult to live there with young children. Another mother، Kyzgaldak Ushkelbayeva—who has spent years in the housing queue—said she now rents an older home in Nura for 25،000 tenge a month with her five children and doubts the quality of construction materials used in the new flats.

Residents say they documented moisture، gaps around windows and signs of mold، and shared photos and videos to support their claims.

Officials: tendered purchase and 3-year warranty

Nura district deputy akim Bakytzhan Eszhanov said the apartments were built by a private contractor، and the local administration acquired the completed units through a public procurement process where the lowest bid wins. Authorities added the properties come with a three-year warranty and that a technical inspection is scheduled in 2026.

20 million tenge per apartment

According to official data، each apartment cost the budget about 20 million tenge. Residents question why a thorough quality review was not completed before purchase.

What happens next

The issue entered public debate on 7 January 2026. For now، families are holding off on moving while awaiting the technical assessment results. The district administration says the inspection this year will clarify the scope of defects and next steps under the warranty.
