Foot-and-Mouth Disease Risk High for Farmers and Vets in West Kazakhstan
West Kazakhstan is facing a growing concern over the spread of livestock diseases، with experts highlighting a significant risk of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) transmission. Dr. Gaisa Absatirov، a Doctor of Veterinary Sciences and professor، has issued a warning to livestock owners and veterinarians، emphasizing that the public is not receiving adequate information about the dangers posed by this highly contagious illness.
Understanding the Foot-and-Mouth Disease Threat
Professor Absatirov described FMD as an acute zoonotic infection، meaning it can spread from animals to humans. The virus primarily affects cloven-hoofed animals but can be transmitted to people through direct contact with infected livestock. However، the risk extends beyond direct contact؛ contaminated clothing، footwear، vehicles، equipment، and even the consumption of milk and meat from infected animals can lead to transmission.
Risks Associated with Dairy Products
A particular concern highlighted by Professor Absatirov is the consumption of dairy products. The FMD virus can replicate in the udder tissues of infected animals، entering the milk even before visible symptoms appear. The virus can remain viable in milk for up to 23 days، posing a substantial risk to human health if consumed. Transmission to humans typically occurs when the virus comes into contact with damaged skin or mucous membranes.
Factors Contributing to the Escalating Situation
Veterinary specialists are reporting a complex situation in the region، citing a rise in unexplained livestock deaths and disease outbreaks. While official bodies maintain that the situation is under control، experts like Professor Absatirov argue that a lack of sufficient public information and inadequate adherence to safety protocols are exacerbating the risks. This information gap could potentially worsen the spread of the disease.
