Historic Zhetysu Hotel in Almaty Demolished، Erasing Traces of Lev Trotsky
Almaty has lost another valuable piece of its architectural heritage with the demolition of the historic Zhetysu Hotel، built in 1908. The destruction of the building، once a prominent landmark، has raised concerns among city residents and historians about the preservation of the city's historical sites.
A Historical Landmark Gone
The Zhetysu Hotel، located at the intersection of Dostyk and Gogol streets، was more than just an old structure؛ it was a witness to history. The hotel once hosted notable figures، including the revolutionary Leon Trotsky and composer Yevgeny Brusilovsky. Despite undergoing renovations over the years، its historical significance remained intact until its recent demolition.
Concerns Over Negligence
The demolition process was preceded by the erection of a fence around the building، confirming fears of its impending destruction. However، official explanations from the city administration regarding the demolition have been notably absent. This incident adds to a growing list of concerns about the fate of Almaty's historical buildings، including recent issues with the renovation of fountains on Republic Square، the alteration of the facade of Gymnasium No. 56، and changes to a fire station built in 1937.
Authorities often cite "seismic safety" as a reason for such actions. However، critics argue that the current approach، particularly under the leadership of Mayor Yerbolat Dosayev، demonstrates a lack of respect for the city's history and diminishes its tourism potential. This perceived negligence erodes public trust in the city's administration and its commitment to preserving cultural heritage.
