Iran's New Leader Declares Strait of Hormuz Must Remain Closed
Iran's newly appointed leader، Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei، has declared in his first official statement that the Strait of Hormuz must remain closed. This pronouncement has sent ripples through the global oil market، creating an unexpected situation.
A Firm Stance on a Critical Waterway
Speaking for the first time since assuming office، Khamenei addressed the nation via Iranian state television. He asserted that the Strait of Hormuz، a vital chokepoint for global oil transport، could be kept closed as a "tool of pressure." He also highlighted the pressure faced by Iran's neighboring countries due to the presence of U.S. bases.
"The People Demand Continued Effective Defense"
"The people demand continued effective defense to make the enemy concede. We must maintain our presence in the arena، and the Strait of Hormuz must remain closed،" the publication quoted Khamenei as saying. The new leader also vowed that Iran would not refrain from seeking retribution for the blood of martyrs، particularly referencing the deaths of students at a girls' school in Minab.
Global Oil Market Reacts
Khamenei's statement comes in the wake of former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's interview with CNN، where he discussed the energy crisis stemming from the conflict between the U.S. and Iran. Kerry described the situation as one of the worst global crises in the last decade، emphasizing the critical need for a diplomatic resolution.
"I am hopeful that diplomacy will be renewed very decisively in the coming days... It is very important for the whole world that people find a way out of this situation. You have seen how energy prices have risen – if this continues for too long، it will affect everyone's economy،" Kerry stated.
The International Energy Agency has reported that the world is facing "the largest supply disruptions in oil market history." Despite concerns، President Donald Trump downplayed the significance of the sharp rise in oil prices، suggesting that the U.S. benefits from higher energy costs.
