Karaganda Region Cracks Down on Overloaded Trucks to Protect Roads
Authorities in the Karaganda region are intensifying efforts to combat the persistent problem of overloaded trucks، a major contributor to premature road deterioration and increased accident risks.
Addressing the Root Cause: Quarry Inspections
A significant portion of overloaded vehicles originate from local quarries. Recent inspections revealed that out of 53 quarries in the region، only 27 were equipped with weighing devices. This oversight means nearly half of these sites were not monitoring the weight of outgoing trucks، contributing directly to the problem.
Quarry owners have been issued notices to install the necessary weighing equipment and comply with transportation laws. Furthermore، a comprehensive inventory of quarries is planned to ensure all mandatory equipment is in place.
Leveraging Technology for Remote Monitoring
Since the beginning of 2026، the inspection body has conducted 22 remote monitoring sessions. This approach involves analyzing company activities from a distance، allowing for the identification of potential issues and the issuance of recommendations to freight forwarders and mining companies to rectify violations.
Automated Systems Safeguarding Roadways
Automated Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) stations are a key tool in the fight against overloading. These systems operate without stopping vehicles، measuring weight، recording license plates، and automatically generating violation reports. Currently، six such stations are operational in the Karaganda region—five on republican roads and one on local roads.
From the start of the year until now، these systems have measured 2،595 vehicles، identified hundreds of violations، issued 683 orders، and collected over 322.8 million tenge in fines.
Future Expansion of Control Measures
The authorities are committed to expanding these control measures. Plans are in place to install three additional WIM stations in 2026 and seven more on republican roads by 2028، further restricting overloaded vehicles.
Raid Findings Highlight Systemic Issues
Traditional joint raids with the police are also ongoing. In late March، 41 trucks were inspected، with three-quarters found to be exceeding weight limits. Specifically، 29 trucks were overloaded، leading to the issuance of 53 administrative protocols.
Why This Matters for Road Longevity and Safety
Overloaded trucks are more than just a traffic violation؛ they accelerate road wear، increase maintenance costs، and heighten the risk of accidents. Every extra ton above the legal limit significantly reduces the lifespan of road surfaces. The Karaganda region is prioritizing a systematic approach، from quarries to highways، to address this issue، transforming overloading from a common occurrence into a costly and dangerous offense.
