Kazakhstan Army Chief Honors Sole War Veteran in Astana
In a poignant display of respect، the Commander of the Ground Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan، Major General Mereke Kuchukbaev، personally visited and congratulated Rzagul Baikeshev، the last surviving World War II veteran residing in Astana، on Victory Day.
A Ceremony of Gratitude
As part of the nationwide 'Homage to Veterans' campaign، military personnel from the Ground Forces Command paid tribute to Rzagul Baikeshev. Major General Kuchukbaev، on behalf of the Minister of Defense، presented the veteran with a letter of gratitude، a commemorative gift، and field rations reminiscent of wartime provisions.
"Your life path and exemplary heroism serve as our primary guide. You are a living legend and a model of true patriotism for every soldier and officer of the modern Kazakhstani army،" stated the Commander.
A Military Parade for a Hero
The Ministry of Defense organized a ceremonial parade in honor of the veteran. Accompanied by the Central Military Orchestra، soldiers from the Honor Guard company and cadets from the Saduakas Nurgambetov Military College marched past. Soloists from the National Ensemble of the Central Military-Patriotic Center performed popular songs from the war years.
A Veteran's Blessing
Following the tributes، Rzagul Baikeshev expressed his gratitude for the care and attention shown by the military personnel. Continuing the tradition، the veteran offered his blessings to the servicemen، wishing them strength of spirit، success in their service، and peace and prosperity for Kazakhstan.
Rzagul Baikeshev's War Journey
Born on October 18، 1923، in the Mugalzhar district of the Aktobe region، Rzagul Baikeshev was drafted into the army in 1943. He participated in fierce battles near Rzhev and the Velikiye Luki offensive operation، contributing to the liberation of European countries. His front-line journey took him through Poland، Romania، and Hungary. He returned home with the rank of Corporal.
Decorations and Peacetime
The veteran's bravery was recognized with the Order of the Patriotic War، I and II degrees، the Medal of Zhukov، and numerous other state awards. After the war، Rzagul Baikeshev worked as a forwarder in the village of Rozhdestvenka (now Kabanbai Batyr village) in the Akmola region، retiring in 1983.
