Kazakhstan Clarifies Stance on USSR Flag Use for Victory Day

Kazakhstan's authorities have officially responded to public discussions surrounding the use of the Soviet Union's flag on May 9th، Victory Day. The presence of the flag during commemorations had sparked debate among citizens.

No Direct Ban on Soviet Flag

Current Kazakhstani legislation does not impose a direct prohibition on the use of the Soviet Union flag during the May 9th celebrations. Official responses from state bodies confirm this absence of a specific ban.

However، citizens have been reminded of the necessity to adhere to general legal requirements. This includes a prohibition against promoting violence، extremism، or actions that undermine the country's territorial integrity.

Documents obtained from the Ministry of Information and Social Development indicate no specific prohibitive norms regarding these symbols. The ministry noted that such matters fall under general legislation rather than their specific purview.

Shifting Symbolism and Public Sentiment

In recent years، Kazakhstan has seen a move away from the use of Soviet and Russian symbols. For instance، since 2008، the widely recognized St. George's ribbon has been increasingly replaced by a blue 'Victory Ribbon'. This alternative is styled similarly to the Kazakh flag and is adorned with national ornaments.

As May 9th approaches، discussions around the St. George's ribbon intensify. Internet users frequently recall its use by pro-Russian forces during the annexation of Crimea، highlighting its controversial political connotations.

Historically، the St. George's ribbon was not a widespread symbol of remembrance in the Soviet Union؛ the red flag and the Eternal Flame were more prominent. The ribbon's broad adoption occurred later، and after 2014، it became perceived by many as a tool of political pressure.

Previously، it was reported that Kazakhstan had decided to forgo its traditional military parade for Victory Day.
