Kazakhstan Pensioner Loses Home After Falling Victim to Impersonation Scam

A 69-year-old pensioner in Almaty narrowly escaped losing her home after falling victim to a sophisticated scam. Svetlana Sukhodolskaya was persuaded by fraudsters، who posed as employees of the National Security Committee (KNB)، to sell her two-bedroom apartment.

The Deception Unfolds

According to Sukhodolskaya، an unknown individual contacted her in May 2025، claiming her digital signature had been compromised. The scammers then convinced her to sell both of her apartments، each valued at 25 million tenge. She claims she willingly handed over the money to couriers involved in the scheme.

A Year of Uncertainty

Despite nearly a year passing، the identity of the person who initially contacted Sukhodolskaya remains unknown. Law enforcement authorities have only managed to apprehend the couriers who collected the money. These individuals، identified as citizens of Kyrgyzstan، were sentenced to five and a half years in prison and ordered to repay the pensioner. However، with no assets to their name، recovering the funds appears impossible.

Legal Battles and Limited Recourse

In civil court، Sukhodolskaya was unsuccessful in her case. She is now legally obligated to transfer ownership of the apartments to their new owners. Both properties are currently under arrest. Legal experts suggest her chances of recovering even one apartment are slim.

Seeking Further Appeal

The pensioner has been advised to appeal to the appellate court and subsequently to the Supreme Court. According to Gabit Umirbekov، an advisor to the chairman of the Republican Bar Association، if the court ruling does not include clauses regarding the invalidity، non-existence، or falsification of the transaction، she must file a petition with the prosecutor's office and the court that heard the case. This would allow for amendments to the ruling's text. If successful، she could file a new claim based on newly discovered circumstances، as a criminal court's decision always takes precedence over a civil court's decision، according to the Supreme Court's normative resolution.

A Plea for Help

Svetlana Grigoryevna fears ending up on the streets and feels unable to ask for help. Despite her dire situation، the elderly woman remains hopeful that she might find a way to keep her home.
