Kazakhstan Scraps Controversial Teacher Qualification Test
Kazakhstan's educators are celebrating a significant policy shift as the Ministry of Education has officially discontinued a long-debated teacher qualification assessment method. This move is expected to alleviate pressure on teachers and foster greater trust in their professional capabilities.
End of a Contentious Assessment
The decision to halt the subject matter knowledge assessment (SMKA) for teachers was made following a directive from the Head of State، Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Education Minister Zhyldyz Suleimenova announced the change on her Instagram page، emphasizing that the step is intended to recognize teachers' professionalism and free them from undue stress and bureaucratic hurdles.
"Dear educators! Following the Head of State's directive، the assessment of teachers' subject matter knowledge has been stopped. I believe this is a sign of great care and trust in you. An official letter regarding this decision has been sent to the education departments،" Suleimenova stated.
Addressing Teacher Concerns
The SMKA was initially introduced to monitor the quality of instruction. However، over time، it drew considerable criticism from educators. Teachers frequently voiced concerns that the annual testing created psychological pressure and diverted valuable time away from their primary role: working with students.
The discontinuation of this testing is anticipated to significantly simplify the process of verifying qualifications and reduce the emotional burden within teaching staff. This marks one of the first major changes implemented by the ministry this season، following an earlier announcement by Zhyldyz Suleimenova to extend the enrollment period for first-graders.
