Kazakhstan Strengthens Penalties for Attacks on Medical Workers

Kazakhstan has significantly increased penalties for individuals who assault or intimidate medical personnel. These stricter measures، which came into effect on March 7، aim to enhance the safety and security of healthcare workers as they perform their duties.

New Criminal Code Provisions

The amendments to the Criminal Code were introduced following a directive from the Head of State. A new article specifically addresses criminal liability for actions that endanger the life، health، and safety of medical professionals during their service. This also extends to offenses against drivers of emergency medical teams.

Penalties for Assault

Under the new provisions، individuals found guilty of assaulting medical workers could face severe consequences. The legislation outlines potential prison sentences of up to 12 years، reflecting the seriousness with which these attacks are now being treated.

Enhanced Safety Measures in Healthcare Facilities

Beyond legal repercussions، the government is implementing additional safety protocols within medical institutions. These include equipping paramedics with body cameras، installing panic buttons in reception areas، integrating video surveillance with intelligent analysis، and establishing 24-hour police posts in 152 hospitals.

Recent Incidents Underscore Need for Action

These legislative changes follow a concerning trend of violence against healthcare providers. According to the Ministry of Health، over 280 attacks on doctors، paramedics، nurses، and other healthcare staff have been recorded in Kazakhstan since 2019. Notable incidents include:

These incidents highlight the critical need for the new protective measures and stricter legal framework.
