Kazakhstan to Debut Locally Assembled Stadler Passenger Trains in April
Kazakhstan is set to introduce its first locally assembled Stadler passenger trains to the national rail network starting this April. The initial batch of these modern trains، manufactured in Astana، will be handed over to Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ)، the national railway company.
New Trains for Popular Routes
The introduction of these new Stadler carriages is expected to significantly improve passenger comfort، particularly on long-distance and high-demand routes. These trains are designed for optimal performance in a wide range of temperatures، from -50°C to +45°C، making them suitable for use across the entire CIS region.
Addressing Delivery Delays
The rollout of these trains faced some delays. Originally، 51 Stadler wagons were slated for delivery to KTZ by December 2025. However، discrepancies between Kazakh and German technical standards، along with additional queries from KTZ، led to a revised delivery schedule. Despite these challenges، the core issue was reportedly related to the fine-tuning of the wagons rather than their quality.
Updated Delivery Schedule and Scope
Under the updated plan، a total of 142 wagons are scheduled for delivery by April of this year. This includes 51 wagons originally planned from 2025 and an additional 91 from 2026. Looking ahead، Stadler has committed to delivering 557 passenger wagons from its Astana plant between 2025 and 2030، forming 33 complete train sets.
International Interest and Future Expansion
The locally produced Stadler trains have also attracted interest from railway companies in neighboring countries. Stadler plans to expand its production capabilities in Kazakhstan by constructing additional workshops. The company previously committed to delivering 51 wagons by the end of 2025، intended for routes such as Astana-Almaty، Astana-Semey، Astana-Shymkent، and Astana-Atyrau. These new wagons will feature 40 seats in coupe compartments and 58 in open-plan carriages.
The national budget project for 2026-2028 includes provisions for the purchase of 100 Stadler wagons in 2026. These will be manufactured at the former "Tulpar-Talgo" plant in Astana.
