Kazakhstan to See Electricity Price Hike: Vice Minister Explains

Kazakhstan is bracing for an increase in electricity prices، with the Vice Minister of Energy، Sungat Yesimkhanov، confirming the upcoming tariff adjustments. This development comes as the government addresses significant debts within the energy sector.

Why Tariffs Are Rising

Journalists questioned the Vice Minister during a government briefing about the substantial debts، exceeding 37 billion tenge، owed by energy companies. They sought to understand how these financial challenges would impact the cost of electricity for consumers.

Yesimkhanov explained that these debts are a primary driver for the tariff increase. He highlighted that a significant portion of the operational expenses are not related to fuel costs but rather to essential repair work and employee salaries.

"These debts arose due to the increase in gas prices in the second half of last year. In the future، they will be covered through tariffs،" the official stated.

Projected Price Increase

The Vice Minister estimates that the average increase in electricity tariffs will be around 4 to 5 percent. "We are currently reviewing the applications. I don't think these tariffs will significantly impact [consumers] – an average increase of 4-5 percent is possible،" Yesimkhanov added.

He also noted that the issue extends beyond just electricity، affecting other utilities provided by enterprises like the Mangystau Nuclear Power Plant، which also supplies heat and water. These comprehensive financial matters are being addressed in collaboration with the Committee for the Regulation of Natural Monopolies.

Previously، reports indicated that electricity tariff increases were planned for Astana this year.
