Kazakhstan's Poorest Regions Revealed: A Look at Social Inequality
Social inequality remains a pressing issue in Kazakhstan، with significant economic disparities separating the nation's poorest regions from their more developed counterparts. Recent analysis highlights the extent of these challenges and identifies areas most affected.
Understanding Poverty Metrics
Experts from Finprom.kz have delved into the nuances of poverty within the country. Their research considered four key indicators: poverty depth (how far incomes fall below the subsistence level)، poverty incidence (the proportion of low-income families)، the Gini coefficient (measuring income distribution inequality)، and the funds coefficient (the gap between the richest and poorest 10% of the population).
Regional Disparities Emerge
While overall national poverty indicators have seen slight improvements or remained stable، the situation varies dramatically by region. Ulytau region stands out as the most impoverished، with a poverty depth twice the national average and an incidence rate four times higher. These figures worsened from the previous year.
Other regions grappling with significant poverty depth include Mangystau، Abai، Zhetysu، and Turkistan. In terms of income inequality، Pavlodar region leads، showing the largest gap between its wealthiest and poorest residents.
Urban Centers vs. Rural Struggles
In contrast، major cities like Shymkent have shown marked improvement in their indicators compared to 2024. However، social stratification remains high even in these urban hubs. The regions reporting the least poverty are Atyrau and Zhambyl.
This analysis follows previous reports indicating a near doubling of citizens living in extreme poverty in Kazakhstan.
