Life jackets credited after quad bike overturns on Ural River during anti-poaching raid

A quad bike carrying fisheries inspectors overturned on the frozen Ural (Zhaiyk) River during an anti-poaching raid on January 7، 2026. All officers made it safely to shore thanks to life jackets، underscoring the risks of winter patrols and the value of basic safety gear.

This was reported by the Infohub.kz news agency.

What happened

According to the Zhaiyk–Caspian Interregional Basin Fisheries Inspection، the team encountered an ice opening during a planned sweep on the river، causing their quad bike to overturn. No injuries were reported.

Officials: no casualties

The inspectors were equipped with life jackets and reached land without assistance. Medical help was not required، officials said.

Recovery and internal review

Relevant services were notified immediately. Operations are underway to recover the quad bike from the water، after which its technical condition will be assessed. The Inspection has launched an internal review to clarify the circumstances and reinforce safety and patrol protocols if needed.

Winter safety reminder

Authorities urged anyone traveling on ice to wear flotation gear، avoid hazardous areas، and check real-time weather and ice-thickness updates before heading out.
