Magnus Carlsen Complains After Selfie with Young Kazakh Chess Player
World chess champion Magnus Carlsen has reportedly lodged a complaint with organizers following an incident at the Grenke Freestyle Open tournament in Germany. The situation involved a young Kazakh chess player، Aluá Nurman.
Before the start of the second round، Nurman approached Carlsen، requesting a photo together. The Norwegian grandmaster agreed، and the two posed for a selfie، with Carlsen smiling.
Rule Violation and Complaint
Shortly after the photo، Carlsen contacted the tournament officials. He pointed out that Nurman had her mobile phone with her during the interaction. Tournament rules strictly prohibit the use or even possession of mobile phones during games.
In accordance with the regulations، the arbiter confiscated Nurman's phone before the game commenced.
Carlsen's Recent Achievements
This incident comes after a successful period for Magnus Carlsen. At the end of 2025، he once again demonstrated his dominance on the world stage. On December 28th، he secured the World Rapid Chess Championship title، marking his sixth career title in that format.
This incident highlights the strict adherence to rules in professional chess، even in seemingly informal moments.
