An official in the West Kazakhstan region، who was detained on suspicion of raping a 16-year-old girl، has died in a hospital. The incident has prompted a pre-trial investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Alibek Zhupilov was taken into custody on February 25، 2026، in accordance with legal procedures. However، his health deteriorated sharply on March 11، leading to his admission to the intensive care unit of the regional multidisciplinary hospital in Oral. Medical professionals diagnosed him with toxic liver damage، liver necrosis، and non-insulin-dependent diabetes.

Background of the Case

The controversial case began in January when the father of a college student filed a police report accusing the 57-year-old official of luring his daughter to his home and committing sexual assault. According to the father، the suspect initially confessed but later retracted his statement and hired a lawyer. He claimed he was unaware the girl was a minor and that the sexual encounter was consensual.

The victim's side alleged that they faced pressure during the investigation، with offers of money and even an apartment to withdraw the complaint. The suspect's wife also reportedly visited to seek forgiveness. Subsequently، the girl and her mother stated they had no complaints and that the encounter was consensual. However، the father remained determined to prove the official's guilt.

Furthermore، the father claimed the suspect might have committed a similar offense against another minor in December of the previous year. However، that girl's family، fearing intimidation، did not report the incident to the police. Following this statement، the police announced they had re-apprehended the official.
