Retired Police Dogs Find New Homes: 12 German Shepherds Sold for Under $3
In an unusual online auction، twelve retired service dogs، primarily German and Belgian Shepherds، have been put up for sale in the Turkestan region of Kazakhstan. These canine veterans، after years of dedicated service، are now seeking new loving homes، with starting bids remarkably low.
A New Chapter for Canine Heroes
The sale، managed by the state enterprise 'Kazspec export' under the Ministry of Defense، includes twelve dogs named Leo، Mergen، Marika، Mai، Marsi، Mavr، Malka، Malysh، Marchi، Mangul، Minty، and Mrak. The entire lot of dogs is listed with a total price of 12،082 tenge، averaging just over 1،000 tenge (approximately $2.20 USD) per dog.
Understanding the Dogs' Condition
These dogs are approximately 10 years old، having been born between 2015 and 2016. While all animals are described as being in 'satisfactory' condition، they are noted as being 'thin.' Each dog comes with individual identification، documentation، including a veterinary passport، and a microchip، ensuring a transparent transfer of ownership.
Affordable Prices for Retired Companions
The minimum bid for each dog starts at a mere 561 tenge (about $1.20 USD)، with the highest starting bid reaching 1،631 tenge (around $3.50 USD). This pricing reflects their status as state property that has reached the end of its service life.
'Kazspec export' Explains the Process
'Kazspec export' clarified that due to their status as state property، these service dogs cannot simply be given away or written off. The alternative to selling them through auction would be euthanasia، a prospect the organization wishes to avoid. The low prices are attributed to their retired status، with their value now based on age rather than their former working capabilities.
For those interested in adopting، the dogs must be purchased through the auction process، as taking them without purchase would be considered illegal appropriation of state property. It's common for these dogs to be adopted by their former handlers and veterinarians، who often take them home after their service concludes.
Similar sales have occurred previously in Kazakhstan، including in the Kostanay and Almaty regions، where nine dogs were put up for sale، with German Shepherds starting at 935 tenge.
