Russia Declares May 8-9 Ceasefire، Threatens Kyiv Strike Amid Victory Day

Russia's Ministry of Defense has declared a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine for May 8-9، a move linked to the observance of Victory Day in World War II. Moscow expressed hope that Kyiv would reciprocate this gesture.

Warning Issued to Kyiv

The Russian Ministry of Defense specifically noted statements attributed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy، reportedly threatening strikes on Moscow on May 9. The ministry stated that necessary measures would be taken to ensure the safety of celebratory events.

In a strong warning، Russia declared that if any attempts are made to disrupt the 81st anniversary of Victory Day، it would launch a "massive missile strike in response to the center of Kyiv." This statement underscores the heightened tensions surrounding the holiday.

The Defense Ministry emphasized that Russia had previously refrained from such actions despite its capabilities، highlighting a desire to avoid escalation.

Advisory for Civilians

An advisory was issued to the civilian population of Kyiv and foreign diplomatic missions، urging them to leave the city promptly. This warning suggests a potential for significant military action.

Previously، on April 29، Russian President Vladimir Putin had indicated readiness for a ceasefire for Victory Day during a phone call with then-U.S. President Donald Trump. The White House leader reportedly supported this proposal.

The following day، Ukraine sought clarification from the U.S. regarding the details of the proposed ceasefire. On April 30، Dmitry Peskov، the press secretary for the Russian President، stated that Moscow had not yet received any reaction from Kyiv to its initiative.

Last year، Putin declared a ceasefire from May 8-11 for Victory Day. However، Ukraine's President demanded a 30-day ceasefire، rejecting the offer.
