Shymkent Police Under Investigation for Alleged Illegal Raid on Steel Plant
An investigation has been launched into alleged unlawful actions by police in Shymkent، Kazakhstan، following a formal complaint filed by the local steel company، "Sin Yuan Steel" LLC. The probe was initiated by investment prosecutors after the company accused law enforcement of overstepping their authority during a recent raid.
Allegations of Unlawful Entry and Detention
According to reports، the "Sin Yuan Steel" metallurgical plant، which has been operating in Shymkent for approximately 10 years، found itself at the center of controversy after a raid by the Special Forces Unit (UBOر) of the police. Company representatives stated that law enforcement entered the premises based on an anonymous tip from Uzbekistan، suspecting illegal detention of individuals. However، subsequent police checks reportedly found no evidence of violence or forced labor.
Detention of Foreign Nationals
Following the raid، nearly 80 Chinese citizens were taken to the police station. While approximately 50 were released promptly، around 20 individuals were held in a special reception center for over two weeks. Notably، even investors who were in the country to discuss tens of millions of dollars in expansion investments were reportedly detained.
Discrepancies in Legal Proceedings
The company's management claims that despite a court order to detain the Chinese nationals in the special reception center for 30 days، all were released in the evening. "Sin Yuan Steel" emphasizes its legitimate operations، contributing approximately 5 billion tenge in taxes annually. Over its years of operation، the plant has attracted around $80 million in investments.
