Three-Year-Old Aysultan's Brave Battle with Vision Impairment Captivates Nation

A heartwarming story of resilience is capturing the attention of an entire nation. Three-year-old Aysultan، despite facing a severe congenital eye condition، has become a beloved figure، touching the hearts of many across Kazakhstan.

A viral video of Aysultan and his mother، Gulbanu Akhmetova، during a walk resonated deeply with the public، sparking widespread admiration and support. The video highlighted the profound bond between mother and son and offered a glimpse into their challenging journey.

A Difficult Diagnosis and Early Treatments

Aysultan was diagnosed with aggressive retinopathy of prematurity، a serious condition affecting premature infants. His mother، Gulbanu، explained that he was born at 34 weeks. After spending three weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit، doctors informed the family that Aysultan's eyes had not fully developed. This led to a series of treatments، including trips to Almaty and St. Petersburg، Russia.

In St. Petersburg، Aysultan underwent two critical surgeries. The first was performed when he was just one month old، followed by a second operation between 8 and 9 months of age.

Seeking Further Care Abroad

Although doctors in St. Petersburg recommended a follow-up visit in November 2023، Gulbanu decided to seek alternative treatments، traveling to India with her son. Despite these efforts، several clinics in Almaty also declined to treat Aysultan. The family is now awaiting a visiting ophthalmologist from India، expected in 2025.

Gulbanu remains hopeful، expressing a desire to explore treatment options in countries like Germany، though she acknowledges the uncertainty of the outcomes.

A Mother's Strength and Devotion

Aysultan is the second child in the family. His father، Aidوs Bazarbayev، works as a taxi driver، while Gulbanu، 28، and Aidوs، 29، moved to Aktau last summer. Gulbanu credits her own experiences، particularly losing her mother in 2020، with strengthening her resolve.

She is dedicated to raising her children to be resilient and independent، emphasizing that she treats Aysultan like any other child، ensuring he never feels different. Her ultimate dream is for Aysultan to be self-sufficient and thrive alongside his peers.

Finding Support and Community

Gulbanu expressed deep gratitude towards specialists working with children with special needs. Currently، Aysultan attends specialized kindergarten No. 1 in Aktau. The kindness and dedication of his teachers have helped him adapt quickly and form positive relationships with his classmates.

This remarkable story of a young boy's fight and a mother's unwavering love continues to inspire many.
