Sergey Sklyarenko، Director of the Association for the Conservation of Birds (ACB)، explained that the shrinking natural habitats essential for these birds are a direct consequence of urban infrastructure expansion. Ducks and swallows rely on environments rich in leafy trees، shrubs، open fields with grains، and abundant insect life. However، these vital areas are diminishing annually within Almaty.

Positive Trends for Wintering Waterfowl

Despite the concerning decline in some species، there's positive news regarding wintering waterfowl. The populations of ducks، pipits، and the rare bluebird have seen an increase. These birds find refuge in unfrozen water bodies، which continue to provide a stable habitat during the colder months.

Community Action for Bird Conservation

Sklyarenko emphasized that every resident can contribute to bird conservation efforts. Improving their living conditions is crucial. Simple actions، such as planting more native vegetation and refraining from complete leaf removal in autumn، can make a significant difference. Fallen leaves harbor insects that serve as a vital food source for birds during winter.

Furthermore، reducing excessive land treatment and ensuring access to water sources are essential. During winter، feeding birds، especially sparrows، is highly recommended. Providing drinking water in the summer and installing artificial nests can also greatly support bird populations. These collective efforts help preserve natural elements within the city and enhance the living environment for both humans and birds.
