Yana Legkodimova Case: Parents of Convicted Seek Sentence Reduction Amid Victim's Mother's Opposition
An appeals court hearing is currently underway in Atyrau concerning the tragic death of Yana Legkodimova. The case has taken a new turn as the fathers of the convicted individuals are petitioning for a reduction in their sons' sentences، a move strongly opposed by the victim's mother.
Appeals for Leniency
During the court session، the fathers of the convicted individuals، identified as Katimov and Kaiyrzhanov، formally requested the court to commute their sons' life sentences to a fixed term. This plea aims to lessen the severity of the punishment handed down in the initial trial.
Victim's Family Stands Firm
However، the legal representative for the victim's family has firmly rejected these appeals. The lawyer argued that the first-instance court's verdict should remain unchanged، emphasizing that the guilt of the accused has been proven beyond doubt. The defense highlighted that the life imprisonment sentence is a just and proportionate consequence for the gravity of the crime committed.
Background of the Case
Yana Legkodimova was reported missing on October 18، 2025. An extensive eight-month search operation ensued، culminating in the discovery of her body in the summer of 2025. Throughout the investigation and initial trial، Yana's mother consistently advocated for the harshest possible punishment for those responsible for her daughter's death.
In November 2025، the court initially sentenced the perpetrators to life imprisonment. The convicted individuals subsequently filed an appeal against this verdict. Galina Legkodimova، the victim's mother، has reiterated her unwavering stance، demanding that her daughter's killers spend the rest of their lives in prison.
The court proceedings are ongoing as the appeals process continues.
