Ukraine will pursue a dual track in the coming days—intensifying diplomatic efforts while sustaining active defense on the front line—President Volodymyr Zelensky said ahead of a week of meetings in Europe، framing decisions that could shape the next phase of the war.

Two paths before European meetings

In a video address posted to his Telegram channel on 4 January، Zelensky outlined Kyiv’s stance: if international pressure on Moscow falls short، Ukraine will maintain active defense، while the diplomatic track continues without pause. He said upcoming meetings across Europe should bolster Ukraine’s protection and accelerate steps toward ending the war.

The message underscores that Kyiv seeks a negotiated peace but will not compromise on its defense capabilities or battlefield position.

Temporary cease-fire near Zaporizhzhia

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi said on 3 January that Russia and Ukraine agreed to a temporary cease-fire around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to allow crews to repair electricity transmission lines. Repair work has already begun، and the pause is expected to last several days، according to the IAEA.

The limited truce is significant for energy security and regional stability، reducing immediate risks around Europe’s largest nuclear facility while critical infrastructure is restored.
