Karaganda Schools Shift to Online Learning Amidst Icy Conditions

In Karaganda, Kazakhstan, all schoolchildren from grades 0 to 11 have transitioned to remote learning starting February 19th. This significant shift affects both morning and afternoon classes, impacting students across the city.

Hazardous Road Conditions Prompt Online Shift

The decision to move to an online format was made to ensure the safety of students. Severe icy conditions on city roads have made travel treacherous, prompting the local education department to implement this precautionary measure. The move applies to all students, regardless of their shift.

Challenging Weather Forecast

Meteorological forecasts indicate a challenging weather pattern for Karaganda. Overnight precipitation, a mix of rain and snow, has led to widespread ice. Further snowfall is expected during the day, accompanied by blizzards, fog, and continued icy conditions. Wind speeds from the northeast could reach up to 15-20 meters per second. Temperatures are expected to hover around a chilly -3 to -5 degrees Celsius, both day and night.

Similar Measures in Other Regions

This situation in Karaganda mirrors recent events in other regions. Earlier, in the Pavlodar region, some students from grades 1-11 and college students were also moved to remote learning due to deteriorating weather, including significant ice accumulation on sidewalks, turning them into skating rinks.
