20 Years On: New Details Emerge in Politician Altynbek Sarsenbayev's Unsolved Murder

Twenty years after the assassination of prominent statesman Altynbek Sarsenbayev، his family is calling for a fresh look into the case، revealing new information that implicates former President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Sarsenbayev، along with his bodyguard Bauyrzhan Baibosynov and driver Vasily Zhuravlev، were killed on February 11، 2004. To mark the 20th anniversary of the tragedy، Sarsenbayev's relatives have issued a public statement urging for the case to be reopened.

Call for Reinvestigation

The family has submitted a petition to the Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan، requesting the criminal case be revived based on "newly discovered circumstances." They argue that significant procedural violations occurred during the initial investigation and trial، and that crucial aspects of the case were not properly addressed.

Alleged Audio Evidence

Central to their renewed appeal is a reference to an audio recording، reportedly linked to the case materials. The recording allegedly features words attributed to Nursultan Nazarbayev stating، "Everything is proven in the case، no need to worry، it will be submitted to court in a month، people will talk today and forget tomorrow."

Sarsenbayev's relatives interpret these alleged remarks as evidence that the court's verdict was predetermined. They contend that the decision was made before the trial even began، and the court proceedings were merely a public spectacle.

Demand for Nazarbayev's Testimony

The family asserts that this audio recording alone provides sufficient grounds for a retrial. They are demanding that Kazakhstan's First President، Nursultan Nazarbayev، be questioned regarding these revelations.

Furthermore، Sarsenbayev's relatives have characterized the assassination as a "political act of terror." They are also raising the issue of criminal liability for members of the former president's family.
