Alakol Lakefront Pit Sparks Outrage: Officials Deny Landfill Plans
A large excavation near the shores of Alakol Lake in Kazakhstan has ignited public concern and demands for an investigation. Videos circulating on social media showed a significant pit، with claims that it was being prepared as a new landfill site.
Public Outcry Over Potential Landfill
The footage، reportedly filmed near the village of Akschi in the Alakol district of the Zhetysu region، prompted an immediate backlash from citizens. The video's author alleged that waste disposal had already begun in the area، which is situated close to recreational facilities. Previously، a different site، several kilometers from the shore، was used for waste management.
Authorities Reassure Public
Local authorities have moved to quell the growing unease. The Alakol District Department of Housing and Communal Services، represented by its head Yerkebulan Torganov، issued a statement clarifying the situation. Torganov asserted that there are no plans to establish a solid waste landfill near the lake's shore.
Excavation's True Purpose Revealed
According to Torganov، the pit shown in the video is not intended for waste disposal. He explained that the site was utilized last year for the extraction of sand and other construction materials during the development of access roads. Therefore، the information suggesting the construction of a new landfill is inaccurate.
Future Plans for the Site
The authorities have indicated that the excavation will be backfilled and leveled. There are also considerations for future development of the area، potentially including new facilities to enhance the comfort of visitors and residents.
