Almaty Addresses Public Concerns Over Saiyn Street Bridge Repair Work
Residents of Almaty have voiced concerns on social media regarding the ongoing repair work on the bridge along Saiyn Street. Specifically، citizens expressed surprise and questioned the necessity of removing old cladding only to replace it with identical new material.
Public Scrutiny of Repair Methods
A post and accompanying video shared on the Threads platform highlighted the repair activities on the Saiyn Street bridge. The author of the post questioned the rationale behind the work، asking، "Why are they removing the old wall cladding on Saiyn Street in Almaty and covering it with the exact same new one؟"
Online commentators speculated that such repairs might be a recurring annual event by city authorities. Some users also pointed out potential safety violations at the work site، noting the absence of warning signs، nighttime lighting، and proper personal protective equipment for the workers.
City Administration's Explanation
Responding to inquiries from Infohub.kz، the press service of the Almaty City Administration clarified that the repairs are focused on the damaged cladding of the overpass at the intersection of Abay Avenue and Saiyn Street. The primary objective is to extend the lifespan of the structure and ensure its safe use.
Officials stated، "Over the past 7 years، defects such as cracks، crumbling، and delamination have appeared in the cladding. The ongoing work is aimed at extending the operational life of the facility and ensuring its safe use."
The administration emphasized that modern، moisture-resistant materials capable of withstanding temperature fluctuations and external influences are being used for the new cladding. This suggests an effort to improve durability beyond the original materials.
Addressing Safety Lapses
The city administration acknowledged the reported breaches in safety regulations during the repair work. Explanatory measures have been conducted with the contracting organization، and workplace safety is reportedly under special supervision.
This situation follows a previous complaint from Almaty residents about the hazardous condition of a pedestrian bridge opposite the First President's Park. At that time، over 10 holes were identified on the bridge's deck. The city administration subsequently initiated repairs on that bridge، with completion expected by the end of September 2026.
