Almaty Street Renaming Proposal Honors Poet Mukhtar Shahanov

A proposal to rename one of Almaty's significant streets، Rozybakiev Street، in honor of the renowned Kazakh poet and Hero of Labor Mukhtar Shahanov is generating considerable public discussion. The initiative has gained support from prominent lawyer Meirman Shekeyev، who has sent a special appeal to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Legal Hurdles and Special Consideration

In his appeal، Meirman Shekeyev highlighted that current legislation typically requires a deceased individual to have passed away at least five years prior to their name being assigned to a street. Mukhtar Shahanov passed away on April 19، 2026، which means this five-year waiting period presents an immediate obstacle to the proposal.

However، Shekeyev argued that this situation warrants special consideration. He pointed to past instances in Kazakhstan where exceptions were made for street naming and renaming، citing the renaming of Astana city and the former Fۋرمانوۆ Street in Almaty as precedents.

Shahanov's Enduring Legacy

Meirman Shekeyev emphasized Mukhtar Shahanov's unique and vital role in Kazakh society. He credited the poet with revealing the truth behind the 1986 Jeltoqsan events، championing the status of the state language، and significantly boosting national spirit.

According to Shekeyev، naming a major Almaty street after Shahanov would be a fitting tribute to his invaluable service to the nation. Mukhtar Shahanov passed away at the age of 84 on April 19، 2026، and was laid to rest near the Arystan Bab mausoleum in his native Otyrar region، fulfilling his final wishes.

This initiative underscores the deep respect and admiration the public holds for Mukhtar Shahanov's cultural and national contributions.
