Blogger Sentenced to 7.5 Years for Extortion
A court in Kostanay has delivered a verdict in the high-profile extortion case involving a blogger from Karabalyk. The blogger، identified as M.S.، has been sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison for attempting to extort a significant sum of money.
The Allegations
The case stems from M.S.'s online posts concerning alleged violations of sanitary standards at the Karabalyk poultry factory. According to court documents، the blogger demanded 20 million tenge from the factory to cease these publications. The factory had reportedly faced fines previously for similar issues.
The Extortion Attempt
Investigators presented evidence suggesting that the blogger arranged to receive 15 million tenge from the factory's lawyer. The transaction allegedly took place at night، with the money being thrown over the lawyer's fence.
The Trial and Verdict
During the trial، the prosecutor sought a 10-year prison sentence. However، the blogger maintained their innocence، pleading not guilty to the charges. Despite the defense's arguments that the evidence was insufficient and the case fabricated، the Specialized Inter-district Criminal Court of Kostanay found M.S. guilty of extortion in a particularly large amount.
Judge Adelya Khasenova read the verdict، stating that the blogger committed the offense as defined by Article 194، Part 4، Clause 2 of the Criminal Code. The sentence includes 7 years and 6 months of imprisonment in a medium-security penal colony.
The defense team argued that crucial evidence، such as the money allegedly thrown over the fence، was not presented in court. They also claimed that a search conducted as part of the investigation was carried out without proper authorization.
Previously، reports indicated that 15 million tenge had been confiscated from the blogger as part of the investigation.
