Dam Breach Floods Highway Section in Akmola Region، Repair Efforts Underway
A significant breach in the Shortykul dam in the Korgalzhyn district of Akmola region has led to a section of the crucial Astana-Korgalzhyn highway being submerged under water. The incident occurred on April 5th around 7:00 PM، approximately two kilometers north of the district center، Sabandy village.
Highway Section Submerged
The dam failure resulted in floodwaters washing away a part of the highway. Eyewitnesses shared videos of the situation on social media، highlighting the extent of the damage. Despite the highway inundation، local authorities have confirmed that there is no immediate threat of flooding to Sabandy village itself، and the situation is under control.
Repair Efforts Mobilized
In response to the breach، a concerted effort is underway to restore the dam. Over 30 individuals، supported by 6 units of equipment، are actively engaged in repair work. Local executive bodies، the emergency services department، and residents of the village are collaborating to mend the dam and mitigate further consequences.
Past Incidents Underscore Vulnerability
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the region. Earlier this year، in February، a 40-meter section of a concrete dam on the Badam River in Shymkent was breached. That event was attributed to illegal stone extraction from the river، occurring just months after bank reinforcement work had been completed، raising concerns about infrastructure integrity.
