Kazakhstan Accelerates Forest Nursery Construction to Boost Greening Efforts

Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov has called for an accelerated construction of forest nurseries across five key regions in Kazakhstan، emphasizing the critical role these facilities play in the nation's ambitious "Clean Kazakhstan" initiative. This push aims to significantly boost afforestation efforts and restore vital natural ecosystems.

Prioritizing Ecological Restoration

During a recent meeting، the Prime Minister underscored that environmental protection is a constitutional duty for every citizen. He specifically highlighted the importance of restoring the ecosystem around the Aral Sea. Bektenov stressed that planting saxaul trees is crucial for preventing sandstorms and is a significant step towards revitalizing the region's delicate environment.

Expanding Forest Nursery Capacity

Data from the Ministry of Ecology reveals that Kazakhstan planted 1.6 billion trees between 2021 and 2025. For 2026، the plan is to plant over 210 million seedlings. To meet these targets، new nurseries are being established. Currently، approximately 157 million seedlings are being cultivated across 243 sites covering 2.7 thousand hectares. Six new projects are set to launch this year، each capable of producing 6 million seedlings annually.

Leveraging Technology for Success

Beyond planting، Prime Minister Bektenov stressed the importance of monitoring seedling survival rates. He also advocated for the active use of innovative technologies، including drones، remote sensing، and elements of artificial intelligence، to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of these large-scale greening operations.

Focus on Five Regions

The directive to expedite nursery construction specifically targets the Almaty، Kostanay، Pavlodar، East Kazakhstan، and Abai regions. The goal is to establish a robust system for growing seedlings with closed root systems، ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality planting material in these areas.

Waste Management and Greening Initiatives

The meeting also addressed waste management issues. Currently، preferential financing of 185 billion tenge is available، with over 26 projects worth more than 90 billion tenge already underway. Akimats (regional administrations) have been tasked with timely execution of planned activities. Additionally، they are to collaborate with subsoil users to reforest over 40 percent of quarry areas، including within sanitary protection zones.

Furthermore، the national "Moldir Bulak" campaign is set to commence on March 23rd. This initiative will focus on cleaning springs and adjacent territories، as well as cataloging over 700 potential water bodies.
