Kazakhstan Sees Sharp Drop in Traffic Violations: What's Behind the Decline؟

Kazakhstan has witnessed a significant decrease in the registration of traffic violations، a trend experts are linking to a reduced activity from surveillance cameras. This shift offers intriguing insights into driver behavior and enforcement effectiveness.

Traffic Violations Decline

Data from Data Hub reveals that from January to February of this year، 1.95 million administrative offenses related to transport and road infrastructure were recorded across Kazakhstan. This figure represents a 12% reduction compared to the same period last year. Historically، this number has seen an upward trend؛ for instance، last year saw a 52% increase، and the year before that، a 49% rise.

Over the past decade، traffic violations have typically grown by an average of 21% annually. A primary driver for this consistent increase has been the widespread implementation of automated video camera systems designed to detect violations.

The Role of Video Cameras

For example، in 2023، cameras identified 11.1 million violations، an 85% surge from 2022. However، experts emphasize that not all types of violations have decreased. The reduction is primarily concentrated within specific articles of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Crucially، over 75% of violations under these two specific articles are detected automatically by cameras. Therefore، a decrease in camera activity has directly impacted these recorded statistics. Interestingly، this marks a reversal from the previous year when violations under these same articles saw a sharp increase.

Other Violations on the Rise

Concurrently، an increase in violations under other articles has been observed. The dynamics suggest that the utilization of video surveillance systems on roads plays a significant role in these trends.
