Kazakhstan's Auto Aspirations: Why Domestic Car Projects Stalled
Kazakhstan has long harbored ambitions of developing its own domestic automotive industry، a dream symbolizing industrial progress. However، this vision has yet to be fully realized، with numerous projects stalling for various reasons.
The LAF Off-Roader: A Promising Start in the 90s
In the mid-1990s، entrepreneur Alexander Loktev from the Zhambyl region embarked on a unique automotive project. He ingeniously combined the chassis of a GAZ-66 with the body of a Volga، resulting in the LAF-4101، a rugged off-road vehicle named after its creator. The vehicle was designed to accommodate both gasoline V8 and diesel engines.
A total of 50 LAF vehicles were assembled. In 2000، the cars were presented to the president in Astana، securing the first and only permit for production in the country's history. Despite this early success، the production eventually halted by 2005. The self-cost of an LAF vehicle had escalated to 4 million tenge، equivalent to the price of a three-year-old Land Cruiser 100 at the time. Loktev's workshop still holds the chassis for a 51st vehicle.
The Almaty Electric Supercar: A Glimpse in 2015
In 2015، Kazakhstan's first electric supercar was announced for the Auto Expo exhibition in Almaty. The project، unveiled six months prior، generated significant public interest.
While a stand and representatives were present at the exhibition، the car itself was conspicuously absent. It was only brought into the venue manually through a service entrance after the exhibition concluded. Following the event، the project faced criticism. It was later revealed that the electrical equipment had caught fire، and the responsible party disappeared. A dispute between the project's author and the repair company led to the project's termination.
'Tulpar' Mono-Trike: A Garage Creation in 2024
In the spring of 2024، Timur Murzabekov، a lawyer from Derzhavinsk، began building his own car in his garage، inspired by the British Morgan brand. By summer، his creation، the three-wheeled، single-seater 'Tulpar Mono Traik،' was ready.
The design was entirely the author's own، conceived without sketches. Although residents of Derzhavinsk expressed interest in purchasing the vehicle، its lack of certification made this impossible. The project remains a one-off، with no serial production planned or existing. Details about its appearance are scarce as no images have been released online.
Qoshcar GT Vision 1: A Startup's Rendered Dream in 2023
In March 2023، the Kazakhstani startup Qoshcar Automotive released images of its first electric vehicle، the GT Vision 1. This liftback featured distinctive asymmetrical doors: two on the left side and a larger one on the right. The front passenger seat was replaced with a storage compartment.
The estimated price was around $100،000. However، the project remained at the rendering stage as the startup required approximately $2 million to build the initial physical prototype. Unfortunately، the necessary investors were not found.
Future Prospects and Industry Growth
Rustam Karagoyshin، Chairman of the Board of Baiterek Holding، previously mentioned discussions about producing cars under a Kazakhstani brand. This initiative would involve localizing the Malaysian Proton brand rather than creating a vehicle from scratch.
Karagoyshin stated that the holding was working with the Malaysian company to establish a joint venture in Kazakhstan، which could lead to the production of vehicles under a local brand. He emphasized that if manufactured in Kazakhstan، the cars would indeed be released under a Kazakhstani marque.
Baiterek is actively negotiating with Proton to deepen technological cooperation. In a notable contrast to these stalled projects، 2025 has been a record-breaking year for Kazakhstan's automotive industry. According to the 'Union of Automobile Manufacturers of Kazakhstan،' a total of 171،144 vehicles were produced in the country، a 17.8% increase compared to 2024 and the highest figure in the history of the domestic automotive industry. This includes 158،944 passenger cars، also a historical maximum. The sales market also expanded، with official dealers selling 234،852 new passenger and commercial vehicles، a 14.4% increase year-on-year.
