Kazakhstan's Capital Extends Light Rail Transit Towards Kokshetau
Construction has officially commenced on the second phase of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system، extending the network from Kazakhstan's capital، Astana، towards the city of Kokshetau. This significant infrastructure development aims to enhance connectivity and modernize transportation within the region.
Key Construction Milestones Reached
City Transportation Systems (CTS) has reported that the initial groundwork for this new LRT segment is underway. The first support pillar has been poured، marking a crucial step in the construction process. Furthermore، the inaugural pre-cast concrete beam، destined for the elevated section of the track، has been manufactured at a concrete plant in Astana.
Expansion Details and Timeline
The Kokshetau-bound LRT line will feature over 300 support pillars، with 538 pre-cast concrete beams and eight monolithic beams scheduled for installation. Astana Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek highlighted that this Kokshetau route is just one part of the LRT's second phase. Another route is planned to run through Syganak Street to Taran، then to the old city، and finally to the railway station.
The first phase، connecting to Kokshetau، is projected to be completed within eighteen months. Earlier reports indicated that parts of this line would be elevated. The LRT is anticipated to significantly contribute to the development of Astana's transportation infrastructure.
Testing and Passenger Service
Meanwhile، testing for the existing LRT line in Astana began on September 29، 2025، and was expected to last at least six months. Mayor Kassymbek had previously announced that passenger service would commence in the spring of 2026. CTS has specified that trains will operate at speeds of 40-50 kilometers per hour، with the journey from "Nurly Zhol" station to the airport estimated to take around 40 minutes. The frequency of service will range from 5 to 10 minutes، depending on the specific section of the line.
This expansion represents a major step forward in Kazakhstan's public transportation network، promising improved travel times and greater accessibility between key cities.
