Kazakhstan's Dirtiest Air Revealed: Karaganda، Satpayev، and Abay Top List
Kazakhstan's air quality has been under scrutiny، with recent data revealing the cities experiencing the most significant pollution. According to findings from Kazhydromet for February 2026، three cities have been identified as having the poorest air quality across the nation.
February Air Quality Assessment
The comprehensive study involved monitoring 174 observation points and mobile laboratories across 69 settlements nationwide. The results indicated that while 39 cities had low pollution levels، a concerning number faced higher concentrations. Specifically، 18 cities registered high pollution، 9 had very high pollution، and 3 cities were found to have extremely high levels of air contamination.
Cities with the Worst Air Quality
The cities of Karaganda، Satpayev، and Abay recorded the most alarming air quality indicators، earning them the designation of having 'very high' pollution levels. These findings point to significant environmental challenges within these urban centers.
Additionally، cities such as Almaty، Oskemen، Ridder، Temirtau، Turkistan، Astana، and Talgar، along with the settlements of Shubarshi and Kyzylsay، were classified as having 'high' levels of air pollution.
Specific Pollution Incidents
In February alone، Karaganda reported 55 instances of severe air pollution. In contrast، Atyrau recorded 6 such incidents during the same period، highlighting the localized nature of some pollution issues.
Winter Pollution Trends
Throughout the winter months، Karaganda consistently experienced very high levels of air pollution، underscoring the persistent environmental instability in the region. Experts suggest that this ongoing issue is likely influenced by factors such as coal-based heating systems and the impact of industrial enterprises.
