Man Exhumes Sister's Body to Withdraw Funds، Sparks Investigation
In a bizarre turn of events in India's Odisha state، a man resorted to an extreme measure to access his sister's bank account after her passing. He exhumed her body، which had been buried for three months، and transported it to a local bank branch in an attempt to withdraw the funds.
The deceased woman، who passed away from illness in January، had approximately 19،000 rupees (around 92،000 tenge) remaining in her bank account. However، her brother found himself unable to access the money.
A Desperate Plea for Funds
According to the man، he had visited the bank multiple times، but bank officials refused to release the funds without the account holder's presence. Faced with this bureaucratic hurdle and driven by desperation، he decided to dig up his sister's remains، wrap them in cloth، and carry them to the bank.
Police Intervention and Resolution
The shocking sight at the bank immediately alerted staff، who promptly contacted the police. Authorities took possession of the body and arranged for its reburial. The man was subsequently educated on the legal procedures for claiming inherited funds.
Representatives from the Indian Overseas Bank stated that no requirement was made for the body to be brought to the bank. They clarified that standard documentation، such as a death certificate and proof of inheritance، was necessary، which the man apparently lacked.
Local authorities have urged the bank to expedite the resolution of such matters، emphasizing the need for compassionate consideration in these difficult circumstances.
This incident highlights the challenges individuals can face when dealing with financial institutions after the death of a loved one، and the extreme lengths some may go to when legal processes prove difficult.
