Nephew of Former Kazakh PM Becomes Major Shareholder in Atyrau Sanatorium
Marat Balgymbaev، the nephew of former Kazakh Prime Minister Nurlan Balgymbaev، has become a major shareholder in the 'Atyrau Sanatorium' company. This strategic move marks a significant shift in the ownership structure of the prominent health resort.
Previously، the sole major shareholder of the 'Atyrau Sanatorium' was 'DAN-Is-Service' LLP. However، as of February 20، Marat Balgymbaev is listed alongside 'DAN-Is-Service' among shareholders holding over 10 percent of the company's shares.
Shifting Shareholding Dynamics
While the total number of shareholders remains unchanged at 47، Balgymbaev's entry signifies an increase in his direct influence within the company. The exact percentage of his stake has not been publicly disclosed by the sanatorium.
The 'Atyrau Sanatorium' is a notable facility situated on the picturesque banks of the Zhaiyk River. The complex spans 3 hectares and includes a five-story residential building، a dining hall، a mud therapy clinic، and various auxiliary structures. The grounds also feature a park، a fountain، illuminated walking paths، a sports ground، and parking facilities.
Connections to 'DAN-Is-Service'
Marat Balgymbaev is also listed as a co-owner of 'DAN-Is-Service' LLP، alongside Kuanyshgali Toleugaliev and Sarsenbai Murinov. Sarsenbai Murinov previously held a senior position as the first deputy chairman of 'KazTransOil'.
'DAN-Is-Service' reported tax payments of 1.1 million tenge in 2025 and 2.4 million tenge in 2024.
Other Business Ventures
Beyond his involvement in the sanatorium and 'DAN-Is-Service'، Marat Balgymbaev leads 'KaspiyMetall'، a company specializing in the production of construction steel structures. The sole owner of 'KaspiyMetall' is Tolegen Balgymbaev. This company paid 81،000 tenge in taxes in 2025 and 162،100 tenge in 2024.
Legacy of Nurlan Balgymbaev
Marat Balgymbaev's late uncle، Nurlan Balgymbaev، served as the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan from 1997 to 1999. He also headed the Ministry of Oil and Gas and the national company 'KazakhOil'. In 2014، Forbes magazine ranked him 28th among the most influential businessmen in Kazakhstan. His children، Tolegen Balgymbaev and Samal Balgymbaeva، are recognized as his business partners.
In 2024، Tolegen Balgymbaev was ranked 75th among Kazakhstan's wealthiest individuals by Forbes، with an estimated net worth of $63 million. In addition to 'KaspiyMetall'، he holds stakes in 'Consortium Isker' and West Dala، and manages 'West Oil'، 'Almaty East West Group'، and AMS-Real Estate.
Financial Performance of 'Atyrau Sanatorium'
The 'Atyrau Sanatorium' company demonstrated strong financial performance، generating 339.4 million tenge in revenue in 2024، an increase from 217.9 million tenge in 2023. Net profit also saw a significant rise، reaching 96.2 million tenge in 2024 compared to 18.1 million tenge in the previous year. Despite profitability، the company had outstanding expenses of 100.1 million tenge at the end of 2024.
The remuneration for the company's general director، Venera Utegalieva، was 5.8 million tenge in 2024 and 4.6 million tenge in 2023. In recent years، the sanatorium has reinvested its profits into developing new assets rather than distributing dividends to shareholders.
