Trump issues sweeping warnings from Iran to Greenland after Maduro arrest، vows free oil
U.S. President Donald Trump issued a string of warnings to Colombia، Cuba، Mexico، Iran and Greenland after Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro was detained by U.S. forces over the weekend، doubling down on a doctrine that “oil should be freely produced” and signaling potential consequences for regional security and global energy markets.
This was reported by the Infohub.kz news agency.
Jan. 6 remarks and the ‘free oil’ doctrine
In comments published on January 6، Trump said the U.S. seeks to be surrounded by “successful، viable nations where oil can be freely produced،” a line he repeated across several statements over two days، according to CNN. He added that American dominance in the Western Hemisphere “will never again be in doubt.”
Greenland pushes back: ‘We are a people، a country، a democracy’
Reasserting Greenland’s “strategic importance” for U.S. national security، Trump described the Arctic island as under the sway of Russian and Chinese vessels. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen called the rhetoric “completely unacceptable،” saying، “Greenland is not a bargaining chip. We are a people، a country and a democracy.” The resource-rich island spans roughly 2.16 million square kilometers.
Colombia: criticism and talk of a possible ‘operation’
Trump sharply criticized Colombian President Gustavo Petro. Asked by reporters whether an “operation” in Colombia was possible، he replied it “looks highly possible.” Petro defended his government’s record in a post of nearly 700 words on X، citing major drug seizures as evidence of progress. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime has reported، however، that cocaine production in Colombia has reached record levels.
Cuba: ‘near collapse’ claim met with defiance
On Cuba، Trump suggested U.S. military intervention “may not be necessary،” claiming the country is “close to collapse.” Speaking outside the U.S. Embassy in Havana، Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel vowed that the alliance with Venezuela “will not be surrendered” and warned any confrontation would be costly.
Mexico: cartels and a non-intervention stance
Trump said cartels in Mexico are “very powerful” and that drugs are “flowing” through the country. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed a longstanding policy of non-intervention in other states’ internal affairs، while noting Mexico will continue cooperation with the U.S.، including on humanitarian issues. She said she does not consider a U.S. military incursion into Mexico a realistic scenario.
Iran: protests، nuclear program and June strikes
Amid nearly two weeks of anti-government protests in Iran، Trump warned that if there were deaths، the U.S. would deliver a “very strong strike.” He reiterated، including after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu، that Tehran must not revive its nuclear and ballistic programs. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the Islamic Republic “will not surrender” and that disorder would be “put in its place.” In June، the U.S. reportedly hit several key nuclear sites inside Iran—strikes that halted bilateral talks aimed at constraining Tehran’s nuclear program—following a 12-day flare-up between Israel and Iran.
Context: ‘This is our hemisphere’
The U.S. State Department’s official X account posted Trump’s photo with the caption، “This is our hemisphere.” The escalated messaging، surfacing soon after Maduro’s detention and crystallized in the January 6 statements، has heightened political risk from Latin America to the Arctic and injected new uncertainty into already volatile energy markets.
